What Is Ginkgo Biloba?

Native to China, Ginkgo Biloba is sometimes referred to as the maidenhair tree and it is a plant that has been grown for thousands of years. It is the last of its kind from a group of ancient plants, meaning it is sometimes known as a ‘living fossil’.

Many parts of the tree are used in Chinese medicine, but the ingredient we are focusing on is the Ginkgo extract, which is derived from the leaves. As well as having a long, traditional use, Ginkgo is a hugely popular supplement which is famous for its many health benefits.

Ginkgo is a powerful antioxidant, which contains high levels of flavonoids and terpenoids - these are effective in combating stress caused by free radicals. They also protect cells from oxidative stress, which is one benefit of Ginkgo Biloba amongst many others…

Supports Heart & Brain Health

In traditional Chinese medicine, Ginkgo Biloba was used to ‘open channels of energy’ to different organs and the ingredient can help to support the cardiovascular system, increasing blood flow to different parts of the body.

Many studies have found a link between the extract and heart and brain health, which can be attributed to the increased blood flow or due to the anti-inflammatory properties of the ingredient.

Fights Inflammation

Inflammation is the body’s natural response to any damage or injury and the immune system works to heal or repair the body through the inflammatory response. Unfortunately, some chronic conditions or diseases can trigger an unwanted inflammatory response which can have a negative effect on the body.

Years of animal testing and test-tube research has indicated that ginkgo can help to reduce markers of inflammation, in relation to a number of diseases. While these results are promising, more human-based research is needed to understand this better.

Maintains Normal Cognitive Function

Cognitive function is something that can decline in old age or prematurely as a result of conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Ginkgo is believed to play an important part in increasing blood flow to the brain and some studies suggest that ginkgo, in conjunction with pharmaceuticals, can help to improve function in Alzheimer's patients - but again, more research is needed to establish a cause and effect.

Linked to Mental Performance and Wellbeing

The extract has also been linked to improved mental performance and well being in multiple studies. Other research has also indicated that Ginkgo can be effective in reducing symptoms of anxiety, with almost half of participants reporting a reduction in their generalised anxiety when compared to a control group taking a placebo. It has also been linked to reduced symptoms of depression in similar studies.

Supports Normal Vision

Due to Ginkgo's ability to increase blood flow throughout the body, it has been found in studies to improve blood flow to the eye. Other studies have also found a link between the extract and improved vision in participants with age-related macular degeneration. Whether or not it can help to improve vision in those with other existing vision problems is unclear & more research is needed to understand this link better.

Can Alleviate PMS Symptoms & Improve Sexual Function

Research suggests that Ginkgo is linked to improved psychological and physical symptoms of pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS), with participants reporting a 23% reduction of symptoms in one study.

Other research has indicated that Ginkgo can help to improve libido and reduce symptoms of erectile dysfunction, due its ability to increase nitric oxide levels in the blood. This is what dilates the blood vessels and in turn, improves blood flow throughout the body.

Studies have suggested that the ingredient can be linked to increased sexual desire in women and reduced sexual dysfunction in those taking SSRI medication. Again, more in depth studies are required to create a clearer picture of the link between Ginkgo and sexual dysfunction.

The good news about Ginkgo Biloba is that there is very minimal risk of side effects and it is safe for most adults to incorporate into their daily routine. If you are taking regular prescription medication, always consult your GP before taking a new supplement to ensure there will be no interaction.
